Gulf Coast Cosmos Comics founder Byron Canady is using his Third Ward shop to build Houston's Black comics and fandom community ahead of DreamCon 2026, according to Click2Houston KPRC2 Local. The shop hosts recurring Geek Meet gatherings and artist signing sessions designed to connect fans directly with working creators — and to show young readers that careers in illustration and sequential storytelling are real options, not distant ones.
For Houston families, the shop offers something concrete: a dedicated space where Black fans and aspiring creators can find both representation on the shelves and mentorship from people already doing the work. Canady has made visibility and history central to the store's identity. That mission is specific. It is also rare in independent retail.
The Third Ward has long been one of Harris County's most culturally significant neighborhoods, and Gulf Coast Cosmos Comics sits within that tradition. Greater Houston's creative community stretches across the city, from arts districts near Buffalo Bayou to university corridors around the University of Houston, but anchor spaces that center Black creative identity in comics remain few. This shop is one of them.
DreamCon, which focuses on Black geek culture, gives the shop and its community a shared destination. Canady's events are building toward that convention as a moment of visibility for both the store and the creators it platforms. Houston readers who want to attend a Geek Meet or catch an artist signing should contact Gulf Coast Cosmos Comics directly for current scheduling.
