A scam is targeting families of people who are or were recently in custody. Callers are posing as various criminal justice employees, including sheriff's deputies and county clerks. They demand electronic payment for items like bonds and ankle monitors.

The scam involves soliciting money by phone or electronically. However, the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office says it will never request payment in this manner.

Residents who receive such a call are advised to hang up and contact the Sheriff's Office's non-emergency line for further assistance. The phone number to call is 979-864-2200.
