CDC Investigates Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Now in 31 States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak that has reached at least 31 states, according to FOX 26 Houston, which reported the update on July 10. The CDC is coordinating with state health departments to identify the source of infections causing the diarrheal illness, which is triggered by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis and is typically linked to contaminated fresh produce.

For Houston residents, the outbreak is a reminder that cyclosporiasis does not stay regional for long. The illness produces prolonged watery diarrhea, fatigue, and nausea — symptoms that standard over-the-counter remedies do not resolve, because the infection requires a specific prescription antibiotic to clear. Anyone experiencing those symptoms after eating fresh produce should contact a physician rather than wait it out.

Harris County sits within a metro area where fresh produce moves quickly from distribution points into neighborhood grocery stores, restaurants, and food stalls. Shoppers near the Galleria, residents in Sugar Land, and anyone picking up fresh greens or herbs at markets across Greater Houston should watch for any CDC or Harris County Public Health advisories that name specific items or brands linked to the outbreak.

Cyclosporiasis outbreaks have recurred in the United States in prior summers, and the CDC has investigated similar multistate clusters before. The Texas Medical Center's infectious disease community has experience managing parasitic illness cases and serves as a regional resource when outbreaks expand into Texas.

The CDC has not yet named a specific food source in this investigation. Readers should monitor updates from Harris County Public Health and the CDC's outbreak-investigation page as the case count develops.
