A Texas anesthesiologist has been sentenced to 190 years in prison after contaminating IV bags with dangerous substances at a surgical center, resulting in one death and several cardiac emergencies. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr. was convicted of multiple charges after a series of incidents in 2022 that raised suspicions about the safety of the facility’s medical practices.
On Wednesday, Dr. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr., an anesthesiologist from Texas who is sixty years old, was given a sentence of 190 years in federal prison for the intentional manipulation of intravenous bags because of his actions. When Ortiz was working at Baylor, Scott & White SurgiCare in North Dallas between May and August 2022, he injected potentially dangerous drugs into intravenous bags.
Because of the infected intravenous bags, many patients experienced significant cardiac problems while they were undergoing surgical procedures. A young patient who was undergoing sinus surgery and who suffered from excessive blood pressure, cardiac malfunction, and pulmonary edema was the subject of a tragic instance. Another unfortunate event occurred when an anesthesiologist working at the same clinic used a contaminated intravenous bag to treat themself for dehydration. This individual tragically passed away.
According to the findings of the investigations, the intravenous bags contained a potentially lethal combination of bupivacaine, epinephrine, and lidocaine. As a result of Ortiz's activities, the Justice Department referred to them as a "heinous betrayal of trust," and Judge David Godbey compared them to "attempted murder."
The severe term that Ortiz received serves as a clear reminder of the devastating repercussions that can result from medical misconduct and highlights the seriousness of the crimes that he committed.
