Chicago-Born Cardinal Robert Prevost Elected Pope Leo XIV in Historic Vote

In a historic event on Thursday evening, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago was elected as the first American pope, adopting the name Leo XIV.

From the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, the 69-year-old leader spoke to thousands of devotees assembled in St. Peter’s Square, delivering a poignant message of peace and unity.

Pope Leo XIV addressed the gathered crowd, proclaiming, “Peace be with you all,” in Italian, eliciting enthusiastic cheers from those in attendance. With his election, he ascended to the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, which boasts a global membership of 1.4 billion individuals.

Pope Leo XIV was elected in a rapid succession, occurring merely two days after 133 cardinals convened in conclave to select a successor in the wake of Pope Francis's death. The swift decision indicates that Prevost left a significant mark on his colleagues during the confidential discussions.

In his inaugural public address, Leo XIV paid tribute to his predecessor, calling Catholics to reflect on Pope Francis’ dedication to unity and reform. “It is essential for us to unite to become a missionary church.” “A church that fosters connections and encourages conversation,” he told the audience. “We must demonstrate our compassion and engage in conversations rooted in love,” he continued.

Robert Prevost, a native of Chicago, ascended through the church ranks as a member of the Order of St. Augustine. He held leadership positions in several significant Vatican congregations before his election. The selection of a pope with American roots represents a notable change for the Church, which has traditionally chosen leaders from Europe or Latin America.

Experts predict that Pope Leo XIV will carry forward the reforms initiated by his predecessor, Francis. His agenda is anticipated to emphasize the modernization of church governance, the enhancement of interfaith dialogue, and tackling pressing global issues, including poverty and climate change.

For Catholics globally, particularly those in the United States, Thursday’s election marks a significant milestone, heralding the potential for a new era of leadership.

Pope Leo XIV's ascension to the papacy marks a pivotal moment, with global attention focused on his vision for the future of the Church.
