Anita Anwusi, an LSU graduate and Alief Hastings High School alum, is living her dream as a professional volleyball player with Houston’s first pro volleyball team, LOVB Houston.

Anita Anwusi never dreamed of participating professionally in the United States, never alone close to her southwest Houston birthplace. Preparing for Houston's first season opening at the Fort Bend County Epicenter on Jan. 9, where they will be facing LOVB Austin, the middle blocker for League One Volley is Six home games this season will see Anwusi and her colleagues compete, therefore marking a historic event for the city and league.
"I have always heard that professional volleyball was only found overseas," Anwusi said. "Being able to play professionally near to my family is a dream come true."
The road taken by the 6-foot-3 middle blocker towards professional volleyball is unusual. She started playing middle school, later than many of her friends who start in fourth grade. Her height attracted notice at Alief Hastings High School, and basketball coaches urged her to play. Anwusi didn't discover her volleyball ability, though, until she started a club team following her first year.
She now represents LOVB Houston in the league's first season alongside Olympic-level partners. Anwusi, a huge family person, remarked, "I never wanted to play overseas." "Being here and presenting my city is everything."
