Two Planned Parenthood clinics in Houston are closing this fall as the organization restructures services in Southeast Texas. Four others will remain open under new management starting in October.

On September 30, two clinics in Houston, run by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, will shut their doors for good, signaling a significant shift in the availability of reproductive health care in the area. As part of a substantial restructuring initiative, operations at four additional clinics in the Houston area will be transferred to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, effective October 1.
Two clinics, the Prevention Park and Southwest Houston health centers, are on the verge of closure. The recent decision comes amid a backdrop of persistent political, financial, and legal challenges that have transformed access to reproductive healthcare in Texas, particularly following the state's abortion ban enacted in 2022.
Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, operating autonomously, cited escalating operational expenses, insufficient staffing, and low reimbursement rates as significant reasons behind the consolidation. Melaney Linton, president and CEO, expressed that the decision to reduce the organization’s footprint in Houston is a challenging yet essential move.
“This outcome stems directly from ongoing political assaults,” Linton stated. “We are committed to taking all necessary measures to reduce the impact on patients and ensure continued access in the long run.”
The four remaining clinics in the Houston area are set to maintain their focus on providing essential non-abortion services. These include STI testing and treatment, birth control options, cancer screenings, HPV vaccinations, and gender-affirming care, ensuring continued support for the community's health needs. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas will take the helm of these sites, adding to its management of 18 other health centers across the state.
The transition will impact the majority of Gulf Coast staff, yet the Texas division is making it a priority to offer them job openings through an internal hiring process.
Planned Parenthood has committed to ensuring that services remain continuous throughout the transition period. Patients can expect continued service from all affected clinics through September.
The recent restructuring underscores the growing pressures on healthcare organizations in Texas, as they contend with escalating legal and financial challenges.

Federal officials temporarily shut down air traffic at El Paso International Airport after the Pentagon allowed Customs and Border Protection to deploy an anti-drone laser near Fort Bliss, according to two people familiar with the matter. The closure lasted only hours, but it stranded travelers and raised new questions about coordination between defense and aviation agencies.

Houston has already recorded six 80-degree days in 2026, and forecasters expect more this week as a February heat ridge pushes temperatures 15 degrees above normal. While daily records are unlikely to fall, highs could approach longstanding marks set in the 1960s.
