Rice University mourns the tragic death of junior Andrea Rodriguez Avila, 21, found shot in her dorm room alongside a male non-student who died from a self-inflicted gunshot, prompting shock and grief across the campus.

HOUSTON— Rice University is in mourning over the death of junior Andrea Rodriguez Avila, 21, who was discovered shot to death in her dormitory on the first day of the autumn semester.

The discovery was made during a welfare check at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday following a family member's concern regarding Avila's absence from class.
Avila was discovered alongside a male non-student who had perished from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to university officials.
Avila may have permitted the shooter to enter her dorm room at Jones College, as Rice University President Reginald DesRoches confirmed that no indications of forcible entry were present.
The shooter had left a note that detailed his troubled relationship with Avila, and authorities uncovered it while the two were dating. "In general, there was a significant amount of discussion about their relationship, and it was evident that they were experiencing a difficult time at the time," stated Clemente Rodriguez, the Chief of Police at Rice University.
Avila, who was born in Nottingham, Maryland, transferred to Rice from the Community College of Baltimore County in the spring of 2024. She studied political science and was actively involved in various campus organizations, such as the Rice Student Association and the Honor Council.
The university community was forced to cancel classes on Tuesday as they attempted to cope with the calamity.
President DesRoches underscored the significance of assistance during this challenging period, asserting, "We will embrace our students."
Counseling services are accessible to those who the incident has impacted.
