Cold snap ends as warmer air returns

Houston is about to get much warmer after its coldest week of the winter. For the first time in more than two weeks, the highs will be in the 70s.

The city's average high temperature over the past week was only 50 degrees, about 15 degrees below normal for late January. Five times, the overnight lows dropped below freezing, with the lowest temperature being 23 degrees last Tuesday.

One last deep freeze early Sunday will end the cold snap, according to weather experts.

By sunrise on Sunday, temperatures in much of the Houston metro region should drop to 28 to 29 degrees. In Katy, Spring, and The Woodlands, they should be in the mid-20s. From Conroe to Huntsville and College Station, which is farther north, lows will be between 20 and 23 degrees. It should stay just above freezing in areas right around the coast.

The frigid start will not last long. By midmorning, the bright sun and stronger southerly winds will raise the temperature to about 40 degrees. By early afternoon, it will be in the low 50s. The highs should be around 55 degrees, which is still around 10 degrees below usual.

On Monday, things will change significantly as southerly winds bring warmer, more humid air into Southeast Texas. The skies will be partly cloudy, and the highs will be in the upper 60s. There is no chance of rain on Monday.

By Tuesday morning, temperatures will be around 60 degrees between 6 and 9 a.m., a big change from the freezes the week before. The afternoon peak temperatures are expected to be in the low 70s.

A weak cold front will move in on Tuesday afternoon and mix with rising humidity, causing showers and thunderstorms to pop up throughout the area. There is a 60% probability of rain in the Houston region. Most neighborhoods should get less than half an inch of rain, and some showers may last until late Tuesday night.

After the front passes, the weather will be cooler but still normal for this time of year on Wednesday and Thursday. The highs should be in the upper 50s to low 60s, and the lows at night should drop into the low 40s by Thursday. This time of year is well above freezing.

By Friday, high pressure is forecast to return to Texas, bringing temperatures back down to the mid 70s. Forecasters believe the warmer pattern should last until next weekend, giving us a break from the brutal cold of January.
